Mindfulness means living in the present moment , what I like to call the "now".
There is no experience like the "now". What is the "now"? Imagine years of moments of hurrying around and doing all of the things, getting from one place to another, one day to the next, on autopilot- without even knowing you were on autopilot.
For me, the "now" was the day that I slowed down. I have been interested in mindfulness, seeking this refuge for years- practicing meditation and learning about mindfulness, craving "calm". A mentor told me I needed to slow down, this was 2014, I heard the mentor and continued on my path towards the "now". After more years of clinic work, I remember feeling burned out and taking a week off in the fall of 2020. That was the first time I ever remember taking a week off with no plans or to do's in mind. I was walking on my property at home and I looked up and noticed the leaves on the tree. This moment was clarity, the leaves were vibrant, crisp, and clear and not like I had experienced before. Once I experienced the "now" I find myself seeking out these mindful moments throughout my days.
We are not meant to be in the present moment, the "now" constantly, we drift in and out of presence throughout our days. How do we find these moments? By living with intention. When you are doing a task , experience it with your senses, focus on the one thing you are doing, and take delight. By describing an experience while experiencing it, you are in the "now". By doing 1 thing at a time, you are in the "now". By grounding yourself, you are in the "now". By noticing , you are in the "now". By listening to your body, you are in the "now".
See, feel, hear, smell, taste what is going on around you and you are in the "now".
Moments are longer in the "now". Time stands still in the "now". There is no worry in the "now".
I challenge you to step outside, take a leisurely walk, and look up and experience the "now".
Blessings, Jennifer
